Harvest time

Late September and early October is business time on Snipes Mountain. The days start at midnight, with the lights of the picker peering eerily over the rows of vines. The hum of tractor motors surrounds you in the dark distance, and you see crate upon crate of grapes loaded onto trucks in the night, so shipments of grapes will arrive at their destined wineries at daybreak. It’s a hectic time, but in the span of several weeks workers will harvest the bounty of nearly a year’s work on Snipes Mountain.

Autumn colors

Although the region is known for wine grapes, much of the land in the Snipes Mountain AVA is cultivated for orchard fruit like apples, cherries, nectarines and peaches. As the seasons change, the scenery on Snipes Mountain becomes spectacular with red, gold and green on every hillside. Have a look at the scenery from this past autumn.

Malbec takes Best in Show

Congratulations to Todd and Amber Newhouse of Upland Estates Winery. Upland’s 2007 Malbec won the best-in-show award at the 2009 Tri-Cities Wine Festival. This particular bottle was produced from Malbec vines planted on Snipes Mountain in 2001.

Many signs point to the possibility that 2007 will be a special year for Central and Eastern Washington reds, and we hope the recognition afforded to Upland Estates’ 2007 Malbec is a indication of what’s to come.
