Soils and Climate

Snipes Mountain lies entirely within the Yakima Valley AVA, but features unique geological and climatic characteristics that set it apart from its surroundings. The mountain’s ancient, rocky soils provide the most significant difference. These ancient soils are more porous, and drain more quickly than the alluvial soils of the valley floor. This soil basis creates an environment where grape vines must struggle somewhat for precious water, and where wine grapes struggle, great wines become possible.

The growing elevation on Snipes Mountain ranges from 750 to 1,300 feet, providing respite from valley frosts and supporting a wider range of vinifera than other nearby regions. Snipes Mountain typically receives 2850 to 3950 heat units, making it suitable for grapes that demand hotconditions in order to thrive.
